Sundays, October 25, November 22, and December 13, 6:00-8:00 pm

Welborne Fellowship Hall

As Welborne prepares for these conversations, please join us in praying this prayer, which can be found in our United Methodist Hymnal, number 335, An Invitation to the Holy Spirit.

O God, the Holy Spirit,

come to us, and among us;

come as the wind, and cleanse us;

come as the fire, and burn;

come as the dew and refresh;

convict, convert, and consecrate

many hearts and lives

to our great good

and to thy greater glory;

and this we ask for Jesus Christ’s sake.  Amen.

This summer, the Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges legalized same sex marriage in the United States.  This decision has increased conversation in many faith communities about the church’s stance on homosexuality.  In May of 2016, the General Conference of the United Methodist Church will discuss whether we continue our current position on homosexuality.  A document summarizing the views of the UMC can be found here.

This issue, and the issues surrounding it, are deeply personal ones for most of us.  There are members of the Welborne family who faithfully have different perspectives on this issue.  In August of 2015, Welborne’s Church Council approved a plan for having conversations around this issue in safe spaces (click here to see the plan Council discussed and approved, also linked above).  These conversations will be both healthy and holy, and will be facilitated by The Reverend Mochel Morris, pastor of Christ Crossman UMC in Falls Church, VA, who has been leading clergy and laity in holy conversation around difficult topics for several years.

All are invited to be a part of these conversations, which will take place from 6 until 8 pm on Sunday evenings, October 25, November 22, and December 13.  Each session will be grounded in spiritual formation with a scriptural foundation, and will include space in small groups for people to speak and to listen.  The goal of these conversations is not to make a decision, or to debate the topic, but to listen to one another in love as brothers and sisters in Christ.  In order to accomplish this goal, participants are asked to covenant to attend all three sessions.  To sign up, complete the form below.  Make sure you include the CAPTCHA code!
